The Phantom Knitter of Cape May Strikes Again

I grew up around yarn. My mom is a professional knitter and once owned a knitting store named Three Bags Full. The logo was three little lambs holding a basket of yarn. Aww, how cute! My whole life I have worn hand knit scarves, socks and turtleneck sweaters. In fact, when I had surgery on my shoulder and needed to rehabilitate all the small motor functions on my right side, I would sit with my mom and knit.

That’s why I’m so intrigued with the phantom knitter of West Cape May near Atlantic City in New Jersey. After midnight, there is a mystery knitter crafting small little colorful sweaters for tree branches and lamp posts. Its obvious these woolen wonders make the local residents all warm and fuzzy inside. And it’s much better than graffiti via spray paint. tree.jpg

Mayor Pam Kaithern told the press, “We don’t know who it is and technically, they shouldn’t be doing it. The police are asking about it, but it’s fun and it’s a mystery.” Even though nobody has admitted to doing the knitting, a website called Salty Knits is loaded with positive responses. Just a few days ago, the phantom knitter(s) posted: “We were not the ones that took down all the knits in the park, and the mayor said it wasn’t officials so… that only leaves some seriously angry citizens. But we will not let them win. We shall knit on!”

Mayor Kaithern says that “most people enjoy the adornments that have brought blues, pinks, teal, yellow, reds, purples, lime green and other colors to Wilbraham Park, which tends to be pretty bland this time of year. It’s just something nice … something light. It’s not war, political fights, health care discussion. It’s a nice diversion.”

I can’t wait to see how this mystery unravels.
