MusiCares, an organization that offers critical assistance to musicians in need, has named Neil Young as their 2010 Person of the Year.
A host of stars including Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, Jack Black, Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Sheryl Crow performed at the tribute to the honoree on January 29 in Los Angeles.
The honor is a cherry on the sundae for the veteran musician, who won the first Grammy Award in his storied career at Sunday’s Grammys.
Young’s Grammy is shared with his co-art directors Gary Burden and Jenice Heo for the boxed set “Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972).” His acceptance speech for the award was notably short: “Thanks a lot, everybody.”
Speaking of Grammys, the musical director for the MusiCares tribute to Young was two-time Grammy-winning producer Don Was. The tribute, among the most prestigious events to occur during Grammy Week, reportedly raised $4 million to provide vital funding for MusiCares — an organization that offers help to musicians in financial, medical and personal emergencies and focuses its resources on issues that impact the music community.
