Tired of Muff Road

It could be worse — the name New Zealanders love to hate could be attached to, say, a diving school.

But residents of a town called Orari, on New Zealand’s south island, say they’ve had it with Muff Road. The street was originally named after the family who once farmed on the road but no longer live there.  And to make matters worse, Agence France Presse reports that the local Timaru Herald says that the smutty-minded are stealing the street signs faster than they can be replaced. (The local council has stopped bothering to put up new ones.)

Residents want Muff Road’s name changed — perhaps to Ohapi Road, the old geographic name for the area. But because the road is right on the boundary of two separate local councils, both bodies have to vote and agree.

Until then, the mostly unremarkable road is enjoying its share of infamy. One Sydney radio station asked listeners to share their favorite street names. We’re already checking eBay for signs that read Curly Dick Road.
