Put Down the Bottle and Step Away From the Computer

How many laptops would be thrown from apartment windows if you had to get past a breathalyzer to turn it on?

Luckily for people walking their dogs at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, designers have come up with a better sobriety test for drunken typists.

It happens to the best of us — us drinkers that is. Why is it that when we have a shot glass in one hand and our computer in the other, we think it’s a perfect time to tell people how we really feel? Admit it; at some point you’ve confessed your love to an ex, or told the world your boss is a d-bag, only to wake up the next morning and regret it.

Before cell phones, a broken-hearted man may have found himself with a bottle of whiskey beneath his lover’s window, singing songs and reciting bad poems. But when the evolution of cell phones hit, we entered the era of drunk texting, and various ways to avoid it. In 2006, built-in breathalyzers and number locks hit the scene. Mail Goggles was designed in 2008, requiring users to perform math problems before sending potentially regrettable emails.

And, now, with social media as one of our top forms of communicating, we must be very careful how we use it once we’re buzzed. Webroot just released The Social Media Sobriety Test in an effort to combat future web hangovers. The website says, “Nothing good happens online after 1 a.m.” We can’t help but agree.

Wanna give it a whirl? Go to the website and install the Firefox plugin for free. You can then customize your settings to block Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, or YouTube, and then choose the hours during which you want to be blocked. The next time you sign on to Facebook for example, you will be redirected to take a sobriety test, and let’s just say they’re not easy. You might fail even if you’re sober.
