Less Than a Billion People are Hungry

Wheat2.jpgFor the first time in 15 years, the world hunger number dropped below the one billion mark. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 925 million people worldwide are malnourished, an improvement from last year’s 1.02 billion and is credited to improved economic conditions and lower food prices. The reduction was mostly concentrated in Asia with 80 million and sub-Saharan Africa with 12 million fewer people going hungry this year.

By no means should this new statistic lessen the efforts being made. If anything, it should inspire politicians, organizations and individuals to keep up the good work.

Despite the news, no one is wearing rose colored glasses here. FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf said one child continues to die every six seconds due to malnourishment, a number that he said was “absolutely unacceptable.”
