Eastern Garden Party

Located at one end of Deribasivs’ka, the City Garden is the first park ever built in the city of Odessa. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day of shopping, eating and drinking along the city’s main walkway.

Built in 1803, the City Garden features giant flowerbeds and a large fountain at its center, while benches are spread throughout for people to relax and enjoy some of the best people watching in town. It’s one of the few places where you’ll find older couples and packs of young kids hanging out side by side. And to be honest, there is something oddly sexy about hearing the click-clack of high heels on cobblestone streets.

Trying to save money on your trek through Ukraine? You are allowed to drink in public, so it’s common for people to head to the Garden with sandwiches and beers. For many, it’s a low-priced dinner party surrounded by the smell of flowers and the sight of dancing water. Add a good local beer only runs about 60 cents in U.S. currency.

The City Garden is hugely popular and has remained so for many decades. In fact, last month was Odessa’s 215th anniversary, and guess where they celebrated it? That’s right, in the garden. It truly is the best place to unwind, and at the very least, it’s perfect for snapping a few pix and relaxing after a long day of sightseeing.
