There are many ways to express forgiveness. There’s the straightforward “I’m sorry,” there’s the “I am so incredibly sorry that I bought you this expensive gift to make up for what I did,” and there’s the “I feel so terrible I am going to admit to my misdeed on a big sign that I hold in front of a parking lot.”
What? You’re not familiar with that last one? Then let us introduce you to Jess Duttry.
Last week, the 19-year-old Ohio resident held a sign outside a Kroger supermarket parking lot that read, “I cheated. Honk If I deserve a second chance.” On the back she had scribbled, “I honestly love him.” The young woman was making a plea to win back the heart of her fiancee, who had recently taken back the ring he had given her after she admitted that she cheated on him earlier in the summer.
“I just want a chance to redeem myself,” she told the Sandusky Register. “I honestly feel bad. If I have to stand out here in the rain for him to take me back, I will.”
Although it’s unclear whether her stunt earned back the affection of her beau, she certainly gained sympathy from passersby. “I’ve gotten 57 honks in the last hour and a half,” she declared. “I’ve had people come out of their cars and hug me, tell me ‘Good luck.’”
I’m kind of a sucker for people who truly feel remorse and try to atone for their past misdeeds. I just hope Duttry learns from her past mistakes… and never has to advertise her screw-ups quite so publicly again.
