No One Predicted Octopus Paul’s Death

Who could forget Paul the Octopus who predicted the winners of all eight of Germany‘s 2010 World Cup matches, including the final against Spain? The underwater, eight-tentacled male, called “an oracle” by fans, passed away peacefully of natural causes yesterday. According to Telegraph, the staff at the Sea Life Aquarium in Overhausen, Germany (where his think tank resided) wasn’t completely surprised since octopuses of his kind only live a few years.

Paul became an inspiration to the whole world, and in ways, more popular than the players  because he was able to do something no one could explain. Before each game, the Sea Life workers put two boxes of food in his tank with the names of the teams marked on the front. Paul would then go towards one of them, signifying which team would win. He predicted the outcome of eight out of the eight games Germany played, with a one in 256 chance that he would get them all right.

In honor of Paul, the aquarium plans to give him a special burial plot, a permanent shrine above and a memorial, so that visitors from all around the world can remember and marvel at his mysterious abilities.
