Channel your inner Brandon, Brenda, Donna and Dylan everyone because today we celebrate the most culturally significant of holidays: 90210 Day! Sure, it might be V-J Day and all, but who can think about that on 09/02/10…the date that most closely resembles the most cheesily iconic show of the 90′s: Beverly Hills, 90210!
We jest, or course, but it is fun to reflect on the television show that somehow tapped into the zeitgeist of a decade, despite being set in quite possibly the most plastic city in America.
So how exactly can one celebrate 90210 Day, you ask? You’re in luck, as there are several ways to celebrate this most holy pop culture day, including:
* According to The Huffington Post, ESPN columnist Bill Simmons will dedicate Thursday’s episode of his wildly popular podcast to the show. Highlights of the podcast include the presentation of the “90210 Awards” in categories including “best plot stretch ever.” “We’re diving so deep into this,” he said. “It’s almost like we’re performing surgery on the show.”
* Express your enthusiasm online on the “International Beverly Hills 90210 Day” Facebook page. As the description explains, “this is NOT a fan page. This is a cause!” Its goals? To have the cast sign a contract to make a movie, for TBS to run a marathon and for Obama to officially recognize “International BH 90210 Day.” Seriously…at least we think they are serious.
* If you happen to be in SoCal today, head to Mecca … AKA Beverly Hills … which, to be fair, is not only celebrating the infamous show, but also its recognizable zip code. The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles will also screen classic episodes of the show.
* Or, if all that other stuff sounds a bit too ambitious, simply sit on your couch and tune into the CW network, which reportedly rearranged its schedule to show an episode of 90210 tonight at 9. (Alas, it’s the new show, not the classic).
No matter what you do, please don’t forget to pause and reflect on the show you know you loved…or at the very least loved to hate.
