It’s 9/9/09. How Are You Celebrating?

Feeling lucky today? You’re not alone. It’s 9/9/09 and the memorable date is being celebrated around the world — and not just by people buying lottery tickets.

Symmetrical dates don’t roll around very often — the next one won’t happen for another 92 years, on 1/1/2101 — and everyone from mathematicians to lovebirds to expectant mothers hoping to give birth at 9:09 today are trying to get in on the action.

According to CNN, many wedding chapels in Las Vegas are offering special deals today. The Stratosphere hotel and casino is hoping to marry 99 couples off at 9:09 p.m. this evening. The cost per wedding? $99.09 of course!

Getting hitched is also the thing to do in China today because in major Chinese dialects the word “nine” sounds very similar to the word “longlasting.” Beijing expected to marry more than 10,000 couples today, and Shanghai is expected to help 6,000 other ties the knot, according to the Xinhua news agency.

If romance isn’t your thing, channel your inner geek and admire all the weird stats that match up today. For instance, the date falls on a Wednesday in September, two words that both have nine letters each. Ooh, eerie! September 9th is also the 252nd day of the year and 2+5+2= well, you know.

Also, consider taking in a baseball game tonight. After all, the sport involves nine innings, nine players on the field and 90 feet between bases. Not a sports nut? Try heading to the movies for the opening of the Tim Burton-produced flick “9,” a story about nine (of course) hand-stitched robots that battle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. You can also buy the Beatles entire collection digitally remastered, which debuts today. Why now? We think because of their psychedelic song “Revolution 9,” which features a man saying, “number nine, number nine,” over and over again.

Who knew a September Wednesday would be such a special date. How do you plan to celebrate?
