Pick Up Artists: Lady Taxi Drivers in Ladies-Only Taxis

Pink is big. Giant, even. There’s pink for breast cancer awareness, the PINK line of tiny undies and things by Victoria’s Secret and now there are pink taxis on the streets of Puebla in Mexico. Pink taxis for women, driven by women, some feminists say (according to the piece posted on MSNBC via the AP), are not helping the equality cause.

It seems that girls, women and ladies of all vintages love some pink. So there’s that. But the color is really there to emphasize that the vehicle is for women, and only women.

Why? Because of the overly aggressive ways and means of some male cabdrivers who are bit too leering while they’re steering. They’ve been known to, say, suggest things like free rides, in exchange for … well, we all know, there’s no such thing as a free ride, so …

The Mexican city of Puebla has put 35 new cabs into circulation, which it should be noted come with their own beauty kits, GPS and alarm buttons.

It’s an amazing idea, I think, because why should women be subjected — when they are, let’s not forget, at the mercy of a stranger — to such unwelcome advances? If there are 35 cabs that can help women walk that much more proudly from the sidewalk and beyond, it’s a pretty bright idea, in more ways than one.
