In this news segment more like one you’d find on The Onion News Network, a local Fox affiliate in Dallas lampoons our society’s ever-growing dependence on social media outlets and mobile technology. The anchor tosses to a correspondent in the field, who is ostensibly reporting about a hostage situation in City Hall.
Unfortunately for everyone watching, the reporter has decided to keep everyone updated via his Twitter feed. He has 87 followers. The rest of us get to watch him typing into his phone — not very helpful when there’s a gunman on the loose.
The segment also mocks other social media outlets including Skype, MySpace and Facebook, but the best reference is at the very end when they offer up a Geocities logo. Ah, Web 1.0 nostalgia. If only they’d gone Prodigy on us. Watch the video while I update my Facebook status to “Scared sh*tless.”
