Police Ticketing Children for Doing Good

In Milan, Mich., police are ready to hand out tickets to the first kid they see — the first kid they see doing something good.

Between May and September, The Milan News-Leader reports that local police will be handing out tickets for ice cream and other treats to kids under the age of 17 who they deem are doing good deeds in their community.

The idea for this moral-fiber oriented program came from Rotarian Sara Ford, the paper reports. As president of the Milan Chamber of Commerce in 1998, Ford had read about a similar plan in a magazine. The original article first appeared in Family Circle magazine that told the story of local ice-cream shop owner Ron Barrow.

Barrow wanted to reward children in Jackson, N.J., for wearing helmets while riding their bikes. He thought it would be a great idea to involve the local police — that way, children would see that no good deed went unrewarded.
