When doctors say that all that’s left to do is pray, things don’t look good. That was the prognosis doctors gave Sequoyah Smith after she sustained life-threatening injuries in a serious car accident in May. But the 16-year-old’s touch-and-go condition didn’t deter friends and family from staying positive, in fact, you could even say they kept a bright outlook— bright green that is.
Within days of Smith slipping into a coma, members of the community began visiting the hospital sporting the young patient’s favorite color — lime green. Even the halls of the UT Medical were wearing the eye opening shade, and the kids started spreading their hope and faith to others at the hospital. WBIR.com reports Stephanie Sisson, R.N. saying, “It was just really amazing the support that her friends, family and church gave her.”
Whether it was the neon green, unwavering faith or infectious optimism, that helped Smith come out of her coma, we’ll never know. Complete with banners, T-shirts, bracelets and bandannas, a crowd more affectionately known as “Team Green,” waited for her outside the hospital yesterday as she made her way home.
Team Green is under no illusion that their prayers helped pull Sequoyah back from near death. And she couldn’t agree with them more. Smith told WBIR, “They saved my life. If they didn’t pray I probably would’ve died and I came back to life.”
