Plotting a (Volunteer) Revolution

Many people volunteer their time to help a cause. But what if volunteers donated their time not just helping out, but also trying to get others to do the same? At one Phoenix, Ariz.-based beverage company, workers are doing just that.

Employees of Revolution, a canned tea maker, had long been donating their time to the local food bank, St. Mary’s. The program began when workers went down to donate 20,000 cans of company product, and then decided to make the visits a habit. Since their first drop-off last November, the entire staff of 30 has continued to contribute their time (pictured below at St. Mary’s). Then, when the company heard that the food bank would need more help as summer approached and more kids were coming in for the free breakfasts and lunches, they decided they needed to do more.

The staff at Revolution began calling other local companies to recruit them to the cause, calling the effort “3-D Can-Do” after one of the company’s drinks. So far, Revolution has brought on 14 other companies to the effort, including law firms and local entertainment retailers.

“Revolution decided we needed to share the mission of St. Mary’s with other local businesses in the hope they would be as touched by it as we have been,” said company president David Watson. “I could not be more proud of the efforts put forth by employees and the outpouring of support we have received so far from the community.”

Sure, change starts with you. But it continues with the entire community.
