Shakira Hasn’t Forgotten About Haiti

In a great reminder that people remain in need even after the initial fundraising push after a natural disaster is over, Colombian superstar Shakira has donated $400,000 to Haiti.

The money is earmarked to rebuild a school that was damaged in the country’s devastating Jan. 2010 earthquake. Architecture for Humanity will take the lead in the construction over the next year.

Since she’s such a smart investor, Shakira got the Inter-American Development Bank to match her contribution for the Elie Dubois school, one of the island nation’s oldest.

Last week Shakira was on hand in Port-au-Prince to present the school with a check. Speaking French, she told about a hundred students and the nuns who teach them, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to help you make your dream come true.”

Then she joined the students on a small stage in dancing to her own songs. Muy bien!
