Tenacious D Gets Beastie

tdFirst it was Jay-Z, now it’s Tenacious D — the Beastie Boys have no shortage of friends to cover for them at the big summer festivals.

As reported on Tonic a few weeks ago, the Beastie Boys had to pull out of their summer festival appearances because rapper Adam Yauch (“MCA”) has a cancerous tumor in his throat. He’ll be fine, but several ticket-holding fans have been held in suspense hoping they like the replacement act. At All Points West last week, it was none other than Jay-Z who rocked the house in their place. So what about the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco’s historic Golden Gate Park on Aug. 28–30? Just announced, Beastie’s replacement to close out the fest is the mighty Tenacious D!

The self-proclaimed “Greatest Band in the World” will be making their first Bay Area appearance since ’06 and their first-ever US festival appearance. D member Jack Black is obviously busy making hit movies, so it’s a treat anytime fans can see the duo (also featuring Kyle Gass) perform live.

In a conference call with reporters, Black threatens that they “may shake the foundations of the San Andreas and California may be shaken loose from the rest of the country. The question is, when that crack in the earth happens and it comes between your legs, where ya goin’? Are you goin’ with America or are you going with Cali island?”

Tenacious D became “good friends” with the Beastie Boys last year when both groups toured in support of Barack Obama’s bid for the White House.

Black adds, “I think there’s more similarities than difference, really, when you put us together … We had a good time playing on that bill.”

He also joked that their next album would be entirely hip-hop with a sprinkle of maraca.

Other groups performing at Outside Lands include Dave Matthews Band, M.I.A., Black Eyed Peas, Pearl Jam and Incubus.
