Tonight at 8 p.m. EST, there will be a shakedown on the diamond. The National and the American Leagues will battle each other for bragging rights in Major League Baseball’s annual All-Star Game. But there’s another competition this evening where everyone wins.
People magazine and MLB sponsored a contest in which voters nominated the sweetest people in their communities. It’s called the All-Stars Among Us, and each of the 30 nominees will be honored tonight. The good-natured roster includes Marcia Merrick of Kansas City, Mo., who spends 60 hours weekly feeding people on the streets, and Albert Lexie who’s shined shoes at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh since 1981. What’s more is Lexie donated 100 percent of his tips to the hospital’s Free Care Fund, so disadvantaged children could receive medical care. He’s raised more than $150,000.
