The Ghost of Jerry Garcia Fights World Hunger

jerry-garcia.jpgThe eyes of the world are big with hunger. According to the United Nations World Food Programme, nearly 1 billion people go to sleep hungry every night, making malnutrition the number one risk to health worldwide.

WhyHunger, a nonprofit founded by late folk singer Harry Chapin and radio host Bill Ayres, has been fighting food insecurity since 1975, raising more than $11 million over its 35-year run, which Tonic reported on earlier this year.

In November, the organization will host its 25th “Hungerthon,” an annual fundraiser where exclusive experiences and rock and roll memorabilia are auctioned off for charity.

Up for sale this year are guitars from Sting, Carlos Santana, Cheap Trick and Crosby, Stills & Nash, VIP tickets to tapings of The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a Grateful Dead “pelon” (a T-shirt design stencil) autographed by every original member of the band. Jerry Garcia gives from the grave!

Dozens of other items will be announced over the coming weeks for an event that last year raised nearly $550,000. Check out WhyHunger.com for auction updates and other solutions on how you can take a bite out of world hunger.
