The City of Angels Gets $13 Million to End Homelessness

homeless.jpg Welcome home!

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, which works to improve the lives of the disadvantaged around the world, has announced $13 million in new grants to more than a dozen organizations working with chronically homeless people in Los Angeles County.

The money will go toward creating 2,500 new permanent housing units and providing shelter for 4,500 homeless individuals.

“The Hilton Foundation has been championing solutions for long term homelessness for two decades and we have learned that permanent supportive housing is the most cost effective and successful,” says Steven M. Hilton, president and CEO of the Hilton Foundation, according to a press release. Research has proven that it’s cheaper to house a homeless person than to pay the emergency room, prison and other costs incurred during life on the streets. “This approach restores stability, autonomy and dignity and helps the individual integrate back into the community,” Hilton said. Right now, Tonic is running a campaign to raise $5,000 for EDAR, or “Everyone Deserves a Roof,” an organization that provides mobile shelters for homeless people in California. Learn more about this campaign, share it with your friends and donate here.

UPDATE: Tonic is now longer taking donations for this campaign. Thank you for your support!
