Tracy McGrady is a seven-time NBA All-Star and a two-time scoring champion who famously put up 13 points in the final 35 seconds to a win a game against the Spurs by a single point. The Houston Rockets star is now putting up points in another fashion: to help the people of Darfur.
In the coming season, McGrady will switch uniform numbers from No. 1 to No. 3 to bring attention to the Darfur Dream Team campaign and its forthcoming “3 Points” documentary. The film, which will come out in fall, documents the star’s 2007 visit to the refugee camps in Sudan and Chad. The three points represent the people’s hope for peace, protection and punishment.
In addition to changing his uniform number, McGrady was so moved by the trip that he personally donated $75,000 to humanitarian efforts in the region.
McGrady, who wore the No. 3 in high school, has bequeathed his old No. 1 to the Rockets’ latest acquisition, Trevor Ariza.
