Don’t let Miranda Kerr catch you leaving the lights on.
The Victoria’s Secret model and wife of Orlando Bloom is the 2011 global ambassador for Earth Hour, organized by the World Wildlife Fund, and she’s encouraging everyone to turn off all unnecessary electrics to help raise awareness for climate change. On Saturday, March 26 at 8:30 p.m., millions of people will be turning off lights in homes, businesses, landmarks, organizations and governments around the world for one hour.
“Each of us has a responsibility for the sustainability of our planet and each of us can make a difference if we choose to do so,” Kerr said. “I am pleased to be a global Ambassador for Earth Hour this year and I personally will be participating in Earth Hour, and will continue to adopt sustainability practices thereafter in my everyday life. Together we can make a difference.”
The global event began in 2007 in Sydney but has grown tremendously. Last year at least 128 countries and hundreds of million of people participated, making it the biggest grassroots environmental movement in history and the largest voluntary action ever witnessed.
The fun part is the hour when the lights are off and candles are lit, bringing people together in celebration. Then the next step is thinking what can we all do in our daily lives that will help reduce the amount of electricity we’re using. The Earth Hour site asks individuals to share thoughts and ideas and inspire others across the globe.
As for Kerr, she says, “This year I will be going beyond the hour by continuing to recycle and by buying organic produce from local farmers markets thereby cutting down on the pesticides and insecticides used on our planet and reducing food miles.”
Will you be participating?
