It’s Tuesday. The sun is shining (where I am anyway), so we’ve got that, but it’s not even hump day yet and we have to wait until next week for a Friday off. So what’s there to smile about?
In one little corner of that series of tubes we call the Internet, something is making Tuesdays look a little brighter. In the rest of the world it might just be plain old Tuesday, but on Twitter.com it’s Charity Tuesday — or, more accurately put in Twitterese, #charitytuesday.
All day, networkers writing on charity and nonprofit topics are labeling their Tweets with the #charitytuesday tag as a way to publicize their and others’ good works. A tag is a way of categorizing a post so that others interested in that topic can easily find it.
Every day Twitter tracks the most popular tags — as I write, this list is predictably topped by #iranelection. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, last Friday #charitytuesday hit No. 2 on the list (not sure why one would measure this on a Friday, but so be it). Today, Tuesday, at 12:40pm, it is down the charts but solidly representing behind the likes of #wimbledon, #iphone, #dullmovies and #traveltuesday.
To find the goldmine of charitable news, go to Twitter and search for #charitytuesday. You’ll discover all sorts of interesting tidbits right away. Just a moment ago this neat system notified me that the Turn on the Tap Campaign is “raising money to implement biosand filters around the world.” Yay!
There, my Tuesday is a little brighter, and I didn’t even have to go outside.
