Wonder Woman Day Raises $40,000 for Victims of Domestic Violence

10_chrisgiarrusso.jpgIt’s a feat worthy of a superhero: The fifth annual Wonder Woman Day on Sunday raised $40,000 to help support victims of domestic violence.

“Thanks to everyone who helped produce the event, all artists who donated and to everyone who attended and had a great time,” said event founder and organizer Andy Mangels.

The bi-coastal event featured auctions of artwork donated by more than 300 comic book artists, including some of the brightest names in the field. A painting by Alex Ross (Marvels, Kingdom Come) sold for more than $4,000 on eBay, while a drawing by Jaimie Hernandez (Love & Rockets) brought in nearly $700. The Chris Giarrusso drawing you see here sold for just under $125.

All told, the auction held at Excalibur Comics in Portland, Ore., raised approximately $24,000, which will go to support Bradley Angle, a domestic violence support organization on the West Coast. Meanwhile, the auction at Flemington, N.J.’s Comic Fusion store raised another $16,000, which will benefit Safe in Hunterdon, a shelter in the state. The five annual Wonder Woman Days have now raised a combined $128,000.
