Yes Men Stage Anti-Coke Event

yes_men.jpgThe activist group The Yes Men are up to their climate pranks again, this time in Copenhagen, host to the United Nations Climate Change Conference underway from Dec. 7 to Dec. 18.

Members staged mock press conference and posed as Coca Cola representatives in Copenhagen’s City Hall Square, reports Grist.org. The original plan was to hijack the Hopenhagen Globe, a giant 65-foot sphere on display in the square for the conference.

Using their own projections, soundtrack and VJ, The Yes Men were hoping to turn the globe into one big anti-Coke ad, but they only managed to evade police for 20 seconds before they were stopped.

The group claims Coca-Cola is a serious environmental offender, consuming great amounts of water in some of the more water-challenged parts of the world.

Either way, The Yes Men say they are looking “to inspire vows from ecologically and ethically minded consumers to stop buying Coke products.”

According to their Web site, The Yes Men look to impersonate ”big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them. Targets are leaders and big corporations who put profits ahead of everything else.” Previous targets have included Halliburton, Exxon, Dow Chemical and the WTO.
